On December 21st, Chase had just arrived at my mom's and the kids were saying hi and giving him hugs and Boxer was going crazy jumping on me and I got a phone call from my neighbor. She called to tell me that our house had been broken into and our car was stolen out of our garage. It's a long story that changed many times depending on who we talked to and even from when we got home to see it for ourselves.
To sum it up, two Mexican guys probably rang the doorbell and when no one answered they jumped our fence, landed on the garbage can tipping it over, and kicked in the back door. They went through a lot of things and drawers and made a mess of the place, and loaded some of our things into our car and drove away. Luckily for us, my neighbor was outside talking to a guy asking about a stolen red truck parked in our culdesac, also taken by these two robbers. They got a good look at one of the guys as he ran from our car to the truck and they drove away, while the guy down the street took off after them. My favorite part of the story is when my neighbor grabbed a gun out of her garage and waved it at the guy after yelling at him to get out of the car!
The guy in the truck was caught and arrested and it turns out he was 16. While at the jail he told the police where to find our car but then asked for his mom and when she arrived there was no more talking. It's so unfortunate that he didn't give the location of our stuff or the other guy first. Since he was a minor, he was released until the county prosecutes him in 3-6 months. Frustrating!!
Our neighbor called the police and when they arrived they called Chase as they went through the house and fingerprinted. The officer told Chase a lot was missing including our TV, printer, Playstation, games, movies, computer and the cabinets in the garage were open with Chase's tools so we didn't know exactly what was missing there. As we had time to think about it, we kept thinking of more that they could have like golf clubs in the trunk and magnifying glasses Chase uses for work. We were getting sicker by the minute thinking about it and knowing that we didn't have renter's insurance. So dumb!! Our sweet neighbors went in our house several times and straightened things, fixed the door so it would close and took inventory. Our sweet friends, Molly and James, went in and really cleaned everything up so Mason wouldn't be concerned and ask a lot of questions. They took inventory for us and it turned out not as much was missing. We felt a little better. I just can't get over my computer with all my pictures on it. There are so many precious pictures and videos that I'll never see again. It makes me sick to think about someone looking at the pictures of my babies births and videos of them crawling and taking their first steps. I don't understand how some people don't have a conscience!
When the police got our car back our TV was still in the trunk but nothing else.
We got home and it was a little weird walking in. I was dreading it but since it was so clean, it wasn't too bad. We got the kids in bed and looked around. This was the only evidence, besides the missing things.
Turns out not much was taken. My iMac, Playstation and Chase's glasses were taken out of his car. I'm not sure why the officer told Chase more was gone but we were thankful. They took the golf clubs out of the trunk to make room for the TV and they passed up on another TV, tools, etc. I bet they were looking for money and guns but I don't want to get in the mind of a criminal either. It's too bad we didn't have insurance or know how to use our alarm system but I'm so glad that we weren't home and that Mason was kept from it and all they got were "things". We're grateful for our wonderful neighbors and friends. We learned a lot from this experience and I don't think we'll ever be the same.
